His professors told him he should embark on a broadway career, but his heart was set for Gospel music. After several years struggling for a solo career, God finally granted David a miracle in the late 1990s when the very popular southern gospel group "The Gaither Vocal Band", founded by LEGENDARY "Bill Gaither", previous tenor "Jonathan Pierce" left and the GVB needed a tenor. While with the gaither vocal band David became a well-known sensation in a very short time and along the way won four Dove Awards, two Grammy Awards, and over 13 gold and 15 platinum-selling projects. In 2005, David left the Gaither Vocal Band to embark on a solo career. He now at 38 years old is still touring, performing in front of thousands of people and making projects. But the best thing about David Phelps is his ability to remain humble and down-to-earth and he also has a wonderful sense of humor. David has been married for 11 years to his wife Lori, and is a father of four. UPDATE JANUARY 28, 2009: David Phelps has now rejoined the gaither vocal band!! whoo!! "David Phelps is the best first tenor i've ever heard in my life"~BILL GAITHER, who wrote such classic songs as "He Touched Me", "Because He Lives", and "The King Is Coming". He also jumpstarted the careers of Carman, Sandi Patty, Larnelle Harris, Steve Green, etc.
